The low continuous murmur of a mellow baritone voice soothed her mind, though her body still shivered. A rough blanket covered her where she lay, and she clutched at its edge with her fingertips. Finally, she peered into his dark eyes and wondered at what she saw.

Petal Zinni was too serious. His friend, Xander, had once told her that Petal used to make everyone laugh with his easy, quiet humor, but it had been a long time since the man had found anything funny.

He was smiling now, tender and sweet as he reached up and brushed a curl off her cheek.

“Nah, babe. You’re gorgeous.” He bent to place a tender kiss on her nose. She crinkled her face at him and grinned.

“You’re sweet.”

Petal choked on a laugh. “I’m sweet? You’re literally tied up with a dog leash, sitting naked in my lap after I blistered your ass and fingered you until you squirted in the front seat of your truck, and you think I’m sweet? I must be doing this wrong.”

Her laughter rang out with his, and Remy popped his head up over the back seat to whuff at them.
